![]() ![]() "If a child can't learn the way we teach ... we should teach the way the child can learn." This statement reflects the Specialized Language Development (SLD) Learning Center's belief that children need to be taught in a way that enables them to succeed. Trying to change the child results in frustration and confusion. Changing the way we teach results in success and a feeling of satisfaction for teachers as well as students. In 1974 a group of parents and teachers, concerned about children with dyslexia, established the SLD Learning Center, a non-profit service organization. Through one-to-one tutoring, using the specialized Orton-Gillingham teaching approach, students are able to find success in reading, spelling, and writing. Learning to read is at the center of all academic achievement. Research indicates that for approximately half of the population, learning to read is a formidable challenge. One out of five students experience symptoms of dyslexia. The SLD Learning Center has grown to meet this need and today provides specialized instruction to students throughout Southwest Michigan. Through knowledge and understanding we can open the doors to lifelong learning for our children.
